• Inauguration of the art installation: "Rope – Sculptures" by Alex Dorici

  The artwork ‘Rope - Sculptures’ by Alex Dorici (Lugano, 1979) will be inaugurated in the inner courtyard of the University Library of Lugano on Thursday 13 February 2025. The installation will remain on the Campus until Wednesday 30 April 2025 and can be visited during the opening hours of the Library.

  The work
  This installation explores the theme of three-dimensionality, which Dorici has already addressed in his dialogue with space through large-scale works. Until now, architecture has been the frame for his installations; now, for the first time, the work approaches sculpture, maintaining the language and materials typical of a part of his work. During the creation of this new series, the artist dealt with themes dear to him, such as modularity, line, depth and the way space is transformed by light and physical elements. This evolution marks a significant step: the installation becomes an autonomous sculpture, building its own architecture thanks to a frame that defines its dimensions and shapes. This is completed by the materiality of the wire, which gives structure and identity to the work.
  The work consists of four aluminium tube modules, each 2 metres high and 1 metre wide, arranged in space to explore the perception of form in different configurations. The public is invited to walk around the installation, discovering how tension, lightness and modularity transform the interaction between space and structure.
  A distinctive element of the installation is the play of light: during the day, the work reveals its physicality, highlighting the dialogue between structure and architecture. At night, thanks to the illumination with Wood lights, it is transformed, acquiring an evocative character.

• BiblioAgorà: Inauguration of the exhibition "Stefano Spinelli. Transcriptions"

  The USI and SUPSI Libraries, to mark the renovation of the BiblioAgorà spaces, are pleased to invite all interested parties to the inauguration of the photographic exhibition: Stefano Spinelli - Transcriptions. The Medium is the Message, to be held on Thursday, 23 November 2023, at 5:30 pm at the East Campus Lugano.

  BiblioAgorà is a place of study and encounter on the East Campus. It ideally unites Università della Svizzera italiana (USI) and the University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland (SUPSI). In 2023, the space was renovated to encourage group work and collaboration, serving as a complement to the libraries of both establishments.

  The encounter and cooperation of different languages are a common theme in the first exhibition presented at BiblioAgorà: Stefano Spinelli. Transcriptions - The Medium is the Message.
  In this exhibit, photographer Stefano Spinelli showcases eight large-format prints titled after classic dystopian science fiction books and the 1964 essay Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man by Canadian sociologist Marshall McLuhan.
  The prints transport us to a technological unconsciousness, a non-place created by servers, cables, and fans. Upon closer inspection, the images reveal hidden watermarked texts, which are entire works of non-fiction or literature discussing the criticality, risks, opportunities, and horizons that information technologies bring us.

  Stefano Spinelli
  Stefano Spinelli is a photographer and fine art printer with a diploma in photography and a degree in sociology. He has an impressive portfolio of around thirty exhibitions in museums and galleries in Switzerland and Italy. His latest exhibition, Se nel folto del bosco was held at Casa Pessina in Ligornetto in 2023. Since his teenage years, he has been fascinated by the flexibility of photography in reproducing reality, from an illusory objectivity to the most verisimilar manipulation. Although he does not disdain the first extreme, he is more attracted by the latter. Over the years, his activity has unravelled between these two poles, keeping as a constant the research on the language of photography and the exploration of its boundaries.

  The exhibition is open Monday to Friday, 08am - 10pm, until 28 March 2024.

• BiblioWeekend at BUL

  BiblioWeekend is a new initiative of Bibliosuisse that during the weekend of 25-27 March 2022 will remain open with extended hours and will host events of various kinds. The leitmotif of the event is "Volere la luna" (Reaching for the moon), inspired by which the University libraries have launched a contest addressed to the academic community of USI.

  For the first Swiss BiblioWeekend, USI Libraries will present at BiblioAgorà, East Campus Lugano, a conference with Paulo Gonçalves on the management of large projects and the award ceremony for the winners of the "Reaching for the moon" ideas competition.
