FAQ swisscovery

For users

A.1. Overview

What is swisscovery

swisscovery is a search interface managed by SLSP (Swiss Library Service Platform), which will make the collections of 470 Swiss scientific libraries available to the public. swisscovery's launch is planned for 7 December 2020. Through swisscovery and its USI branch called Reperio, a vast amount of scientific documents can be consulted: over 30 million physical items (books, journals, documentary materials) and over 3 billion electronic articles.

What is SLSP?

SLSP (Swiss Library Service Platform) is a company that resulted from a project launched in 2017 by 15 higher education institutions, among which USI, aimed at creating a national multilingual library catalogue.

When will the switch to the new management system occur?

Monday 7 December 2020.

What happens in the meantime?

Loans and bookings will continue in the actual system until 2 December 2020. From Thursday 3 December 2020 until Monday 7 December 2020 at 12:00 am no loans or bookings will be possible in the new or in the old system. During this migration period, documents on loan can be kept or returned normally. See also Loan service > What happens to my current loans?.

What do I need to do?

To profit from the full spectrum of services provided by swisscovery and Reperio a new registration is needed. For details: Registration > Do I have to register?

What can I do in the new system?

All library services that were offered in the old system will be available in the new swisscovery system. Moreover, a new function to request documents called SLSP-Courier was added. See Loans from other libraries (ILL) > How can I receive a book you do not own?

Who can help me?

In case of questions or doubts please contact info-BiUSI@usi.ch

A.2. Registration

Do I have to register?

Yes. Even if you are already a library user, you need to register again for free using your SWITCH edu-ID.
You can already do it here: https://registration.slsp.ch/?iz=usi.

If you do not have a SWITCH edu-ID account, you'll be able to create one during the registration process. We warmly suggest to associate your SWITCH edu-ID account to your USI (or your specific university's) affiliation during the registration.

If you have an account in an existing library network (e.g. Sbt, NEBIS, etc.), you will still need a new registration.

To help you with the registration we produced instructions in pdf (Italian).

For additional questions please contact info-BiUSI@usi.ch.

Can I still borrow books from libraries in the Sistema bibliotecario ticinese (Sbt) with my card?

Yes. The account at Sbt remains active. USI affiliates will, however, need to pay an activation fee.

How much does the registration cost if I am not affiliated to a university?

Registration is free of charge for everybody.

What do I need to do if I never had a library card?

First of all, you need to register (see Do I have to register?). With an active registration, you can come to one of the swisscovery libraries and request your user card.

Can I register if I live abroad? Do limitations apply?

Registration is also available from abroad. Foreign residents wishing to register to swisscovery must use a SWITCH edu-id account, just like Swiss residents (see Do I have to register?). For limitations, see Loan service > Which category of users exist, and what are their limitations?

A.3. Searching for books, journals, etc.

Where do I search for library documents?

To make their collections visible, the USI libraries will provide a search interface named Reperio, that will be the USI branch of the new system. In Reperio the collections of all other swisscovery libraries will also be visible. The search interface will be integrated into the websites of the USI libraries.

Moreover, also beginning on 7 December 2020, a new national research interface will allow you to browse the collections of the 470 libraries in the new system.

Will books from the USI libraries still be searchable in the Sbt catalogue?

No. You will no longer be able to find documents held in the USI libraries in the Sistema bibliotecario ticinese catalogue. Likewise, in swisscovery and Reperio the collections of the Sbt libraries will not be visible anymore.

A.4. Loan service

What happens to my current loans?

Loans and bookings of documents from the USI libraries will be kept during the migration. If your new SWITCH edu-ID account is active, starting from 7 December 2020 we will transfer your loans and booking to the new swisscovery system as quickly as possible.

Can I still use my old card?

Yes, of course. First of all, we remind you that new registration is needed. During the swisscovery registration (see Registration > Do I have to register?) USI affiliates will profit from the automatic transfer of their card number, and no further action will be required. Non-USI patrons can insert their actual card number manually during the registration process.
All cards will then be ready for use in the new system.

Can I still contact the USI libraries to manage my Sbt user account?

No. From 7 December 2020, you need to contact an Sbt library (https://www.sbt.ti.ch/sbt/) for all inquiries regarding their system.

Will the list of past loans be migrated into the new system?

Unfortunately, migration of your past loans is technically not possible.

How can I save the list of past loans from the old system?

Start in the Sbt OPAC:
[Menu on top] Login utente > Login with card number + password > Click on the corresponding number in the row “Storico dei prestiti” >

To print the list: [Menu on top] Stampa
or
Copy to Excel: Select all (keys ‘Ctrl + a’ on PC, ‘Cmd + a’ on Mac) > Copy (keys ‘Ctrl + c’ on PC, ‘Cmd + c’ on Mac) > Open a new Excel sheet > Paste (keys ‘Ctrl + v’ on PC, ‘Cmd + v’ on Mac) > delete rows in excess

Are there fee-based services? How much do they cost?

Fee-based services are limited to document requests from other libraries, depending on the user category you belong to.

Which categories of users exist, and what are their limitations?

Max. loans Max. bookings and requests Interlibrary loan SLSP-Courier
Swiss resident, Student, Academic staff 100 50
Foreign resident in the border area* 100 50 No No
Foreign resident 5 5 No No

How can I pay?

For the moment, only cash payments are accepted in the USI libraries.

A.5. Loans from other libraries (ILL)

How can I receive a book you do not own?

In the new swisscovery system, the SLSP-Courier service allows you to directly request a book online from one library and collect in another library of your choice.

See How does it work? (pdf in Italian)

If the book you are looking for is not available via SLSP-Courier or is not present in swisscovery, fill in the online Interlibrary loan form. Our libraries will locate a copy and order it for you.

Which fines will be applied if I return items from other libraries late?

The same fines and notification method apply for our books and for books from other libraries. See Loan service > Which fines will be applied if I return items late?

For libraries

B.1. Registration

To profit from the interlibrary loan service with the USI libraries and with all other SLSP libraries, external libraries have to request an account by contacting SLSP directly. Please use this address: support@slsp.ch

B.2. ILL loan requests

Interlibrary workflows are still being defined. For the time being, please send your request for our libraries by email:
